I-66 Toll FAQ
Common questions about I-66 Express Lane tolls and TollCast.
I-66 Inside the Beltway
What are the I-66 toll hours?
I-66 Express Lanes Inside the Beltway tolls apply Monday through Friday. Eastbound (toward DC): 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM. Westbound (away from DC): 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. I-66 is free on weekends and federal holidays.
Are all lanes tolled on I-66?
Yes. On I-66 Inside the Beltway, all lanes are tolled during peak hours — there is no free lane option on I-66 itself. If you don't want to pay the toll, your alternatives are Route 50 or Route 29. This is different from I-495 and I-395, which have free general-purpose lanes alongside paid express lanes.
How much do I-66 tolls cost?
Prices range from under $1 during light traffic to over $40 during heavy congestion. A typical full-corridor commute (I-66 West to Washington) during the AM peak costs $4–$15. The highest prices occur between 7:30–8:30 AM eastbound and 5:00–6:00 PM westbound. Shorter segments cost less.
Why do I-66 tolls change so much?
I-66 uses dynamic pricing — tolls recalculate every 15 minutes based on real-time traffic volume. When more drivers are on the road, prices rise. The goal is to maintain a minimum speed (45+ mph). Think of it like surge pricing for highways.
Can HOV vehicles use I-66 for free?
Yes. HOV-2+ with an E-ZPass Flex set to HOV mode rides free during peak hours. The transponder must be switched to HOV mode before entering the tolled segment. Solo drivers always pay.
Is I-66 free on weekends?
Yes. I-66 Express Lanes Inside the Beltway are free and open to all traffic on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays. Tolls only apply on weekdays during the designated peak windows.
What happens if I drive on I-66 without E-ZPass during peak?
Your license plate will be photographed and you will receive a toll bill by mail (Pay-By-Plate). The Pay-By-Plate rate is higher than the E-ZPass rate.
Does TollCast cover I-66 Outside the Beltway?
Not yet. I-66 Outside the Beltway (between I-495 and Gainesville/Route 29) is a completely separate system operated by Ferrovial under a private concession — it has Express Lanes alongside free general-purpose lanes, and uses a different pricing system. TollCast currently covers I-66 Inside the Beltway only. OTB support is on the roadmap. Join the waitlist to be notified when it launches.
