What does the deal verdict mean?
Every live price is scored EXCEPTIONAL → HORRENDOUS by comparing it to the historical average for that exact 15-minute window on the same day of week. EXCEPTIONAL means you're paying well below typical — great time to go. HORRENDOUS means you're being charged far above the usual rate for this time slot.
What is "Worth It?"
New in TollCast 2.0. The deal verdict tells you whether today's toll is cheap or expensive for this time of day. Worth It? answers a different question: should you pay it at all. You tell TollCast where you drive and what an hour of your time is worth; it times both routes live — I-66 and the free way around — and says TAKE I-66 or TAKE THE FREE ROUTE, with the per-minute cost of the time you'd save. The two can honestly disagree: a genuinely good price is still a bad buy when the free route is four minutes behind. Works in the app and on CarPlay.
What does Pro add?
TollCast Pro unlocks Worth It?, push alerts ("tell me when I-66 drops to GOOD DEAL or better"), the toll recovery alert, widgets, and the 60-minute forecast — the "should I leave now or in 20 min?" call. TollCast has been logging I-66 pricing every 5 minutes since late 2018 — over seven years of data. The "typical" curve is the average price for that exact 15-minute window, same day of week.
Does it work on weekends?
I-66 is free on weekends — TollCast shows "Free" and won't bother you with alerts.
Why does the price sometimes say "Estimate"?
TollCast pulls live prices directly from VDOT's toll system. Occasionally VDOT's feed goes down or reports incorrect data. When that happens, TollCast automatically switches to a historical estimate based on seven years of pricing data for that exact time slot and day of week. Live prices return automatically as soon as VDOT's system recovers — no action needed on your end.

Live I-66 Express Lane Toll Prices
TollCast shows the live toll price for I-66 Inside the Beltway and tells you whether the price is a deal or a rip-off compared to years of historical data. TollCast 2.0 goes one step further with Worth It?: it times the toll road and the free route around it in real time, prices the minutes saved against what your time is worth, and tells you which road to take. I-495 and I-395 are on the roadmap.
I-66 Express Lanes Inside the Beltway tolls apply Monday through Friday: eastbound toward DC from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM, and westbound away from DC from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. All lanes are tolled during these hours — there are no free lanes on I-66 ITB during peak. Tolls are free on weekends and federal holidays.
Prices change every 15 minutes based on traffic demand, ranging from under $1 to over $40. TollCast compares the current price against years of historical data — logged every 5 minutes since late 2018 — to generate a deal verdict from EXCEPTIONAL DEAL to HORRENDOUS.
